CAISO’s Reliability Coordinator, RC West, has become the official operator of record for 16 Balancing authorities in California and one in Mexico. These operations began on July 1, 2019.
According to the CAISO press release, “The July 1 cutover marks the first phase of a transition of power grid oversight responsibility from Peak Reliability to the ISO’s service, RC West. It culminates work the ISO begun in January 2018 to become a Reliability Coordinator for entities within its footprint and to offer the service to all balancing authorities and transmission operators in the West. […] In the first operational phase, RC West officially took over RC services for balancing authorities and transmission for the majority of California, and one entity in Mexico, Centro Nacional de Control de Energia (CENACE.)”
Further phases will expand to 23 other electrical entities within the Western Interconnection (counting for 87% of total load in the wester US) pending further NERC certification in November 2019.
